GM crops are a threat to my children

Nicola Moir, Sydney

As a mother I am very focused on the wellbeing of my children. This focus has made me more aware of the nutritional value of food.  I see the increasing introduction of GM crops as a threat to the health of my children, our society, and our landscape.

I think the adoption of GM crops in Australia exposes an inherent problem of corporate control within our government decision-making processes.  The science on the health and environmental impacts of GM raise some very worrying issues that seem to have been deliberately ignored by the government.

It is unnerving that the national government body for scientific research CSIRO are acting in the interests of the biotech corporations such as Monsanto by supporting GM food production.

I am thankful for the Truefood Network to campaign for honesty and integrity in the debate about the Australian food supply. I feel that the public have not been made aware of the hugely damaging consequences of this shift to GM crops. If more people knew the truth on GM food there would be a public outcry to stop their use.

I believe that my children’s generation are being exploited by this proliferation of GM crops. This is a case of the financial interests of a few taking preference over the health and welfare of people and the environment.
