Bakers Delights customers

UPDATE: In a positive step forward, Bakers Delight responded to consumer pressure and have now promised to not use genetically modified wheat in their baked goods. Congratulations to everyone who took action! We'd still like Bakers Delight to use its position as the biggest bakery franchise in Australia to support stronger GM labelling legislation and to oppose the release of GM wheat in Australia. In the meantime, it is great to see Bakers Delight respecting customer concerns.

This week we are suggesting that Bakers Delight change its well-publicised motto:

“Bakers Delight bakers use real ingredients to bake unreal bread.”

To the less snappy motto:  “Bakers Delight bakers use risky genetically modified ingredients to bake unreal bread.”

If you shop at Bakers Delight, you will soon lose your right to know if you’re eating safe and real food. This is due to a dangerous trifecta:

  • Australia is currently trialling GM wheat with the intention to commercialise it by 2015.
  • Under Australia’s current labelling laws, bakeries are exempt from letting customers know if their products contain GM.
  • Unlike other bakeries, Bakers Delight hasn’t committed to not use GM ingredients.

On 9 December, the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council will recommend changes to the way we label our food.

Bakers Delight is Australia’s biggest bakery franchise. If they publicly support our right to choose safe bread, the government will listen.

So stand up for the scone, battle for the baguette. Ask Baker's Delight to respect our right to choose real food.

Give Bakers Delight a call, write to them on Twitter or Facebook (@bakers delight) or fill out their online contact form. Say you want them to support a closure to the GM labelling loopholes and to commit to not using GM ingredients in their baked goods.

TAKE ACTION:

Facebook: With a message like @Bakers Delight if you use 'real' ingredients then you should commit to not using GM ingredients and support the call for stronger GM labelling legislation.

Tweet: @bakersdelight use ‘real’ ingredients? Then say no to #GMOs
